Clinic Support
Jen van de Kamer
Hi everyone! I joined First Canadian Chiropractic and Acupuncture Centre in May 2007. I'm very happy I did. I first became very interested in Chiropractic and Acupuncture when I worked for another clinic from 2002 to 2007. It was there that I realized the incredible powers of chiropractic and that this was an area I wanted to stay in. I've had a variety of different positions over the years, with the majority of my working life involving the hospitality industry. I enjoy the challenges at this clinic and love the people I work with. It's a great way to spend my work time!
About the Doctors
Dr. Doris Mertins
Dr. Doris Mertins founded First Canadian Chiropractic and Acupuncture Centre in 1994.
Doris received her Bachelor of Science degree (Biology) from the University of Western Ontario and went on to graduate from the
Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in 1992. In 1999, she completed a Fellowship in Chiropractic Sports Sciences.
In 1996, she began her acupuncture studies at the Academy of Traditional Acupuncture in Toronto. Since then she has studied in
both China and Sri Lanka and has completed the Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program offered at McMaster University. She
combines her knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine with evidence-based anatomical acupuncture and succeeds in developing
effective strategies tailored to the specific needs of her individual patients.
A firm believer in upgrading her knowledge and skills on an ongoing basis so she can provide her patients with a range of
complementary treatment options, Doris continues to take educational courses through both CMCC and McMaster. As part of her
commitment to staying current with best practices and emerging trends, Doris has completed a wide variety of courses,
including:
- McMaster University Contemporary Medical Acupuncture
-
- Core Program
- Upper Limb and Lower Limb Specialty
- Functional Assessment and Management of Musculoskeletal Problems
- Active Release Therapy – Upper Limb
- Graston Provider
- Kinesiotaping Technique Provider
- Dynamic Neuromuscular
- Stabilization – Introduction
- Craniosacral Therapy – Levels 1 & 2
- Counterstrain/Positional Release Therapy

Whether dealing with the effects of white collar stress or athletic injuries, Doris focuses on delivering superior care by
creating customized treatment plans. She leverages the benefits of gentle manipulation, soft tissue therapy, acupuncture
and exercise to optimize her patients’ health and performance.
In the past, Doris has also taught at CMCC as a small group leader helping third year students improve their clinical
skills.
Dr. Darcie Sinclair
Dr. Sinclair has practiced at First Canadian Chiropractic and Acupuncture Centre since 1997.
Darcie graduated in 1996 from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in Toronto after earning an honours degree
from Queen’s University in the Life Sciences program.
Following an initial course of acupuncture study in Sri Lanka in 1994, she has furthered her study of acupuncture at both
McMaster University in the Contemporary Medical Acupuncture program and at programs offered through CMCC. Darcie's unique
combination of acupuncture training allows her to combine the most effective components of traditional acupuncture with a
scientific, evidence-based approach to acupuncture, which she has found maximizes the effect of treatment for her patients.
In conjunction with acupuncture and gentle joint manipulation, Darcie uses a wide range of soft tissue techniques to
help her patients achieve their health and functional goals. While many of her patients work in an office
environment and have high stress jobs, she also treats many amateur and elite athletes. She believes in creating a
customized treatment plan for each individual with a focus on getting the patient back to what they want to do as soon as
possible.
Darcie believes that ongoing education, both as an educator and a student, is essential to providing excellent care to her
patients. She is constantly striving to find new ways to help patients optimize their health and
wellbeing. Darcie has recently returned from the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago where she completed the
first level of study in Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization. This is a newer method of treatment that
employs neurophysiological principles in both treatment and exercise to optimize the function of the locomotor system,
optimizing performance and health not only in sport but also in daily activities.
The following are some continuing education certifications obtained by Darcie:
- McMaster University Contemporary Medical Acupuncture
-
- Core Program
- Upper Limb Specialty
- Functional Assessment and Management of Musculoskeletal Problems
- Kinesiotaping Technique Provider
- Graston Technique Provider
- Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization Level 1
- Craniosacral Therapy Level 1
Building on a long time love of animals and a fascination with their ability to heal quickly, Darcie will begin studies in the
Canadian Animal Chiropractic Certification Program in September 2009. Here she will study how to apply her years
of clinical experience to also help our fuzzy friends with their movement and functional difficulties.
Darcie's primary focus will continue to be to work with her human patients at First Canadian Place.
Dr. Sinclair has been a part-time faculty member at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College since 1998 where she
facilitates third year students in honing their diagnostic and patient care skills.
Dr. Michelle Basil
After attaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Dalhousie University in 1997, Dr. Basil went on to complete her Doctor of Chiropractic degree at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto in 2001. Since 1999, Dr. Basil has been practicing acupuncture, having taken courses in Toronto, Sri Lanka and Australia.
In addition to chiropractic and acupuncture, Michelle incorporates soft tissue techniques including Graston technique and myofascial release, as well as, activator technique, exercise and ergonomic advice into her patient care.
As well as holding Canadian and Ontario memberships, Dr. Basil is also a member of the Chiropractors and Osteopaths Registration Board of New South Wales, Australia where she practiced for several years. |
